Mexican American immigrants called themselves Mexican Americans or Chicanos. The term Chicano came into being during the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's. Mexican Americans can be Hispanic (with origins from Spain in Europe) or decendents of indiginous peoples in Mexico and Middle America. They can also be descendents of both Mexican and American Indian peoples. They are very proud of Aztec and Mayan Indian cultural heritage.
